Get Your Snifters Up

Ffinally... (see yesterday) Maybe it was just me, but was that not the longest-short week ever?
Yabadaba-DONE
Bringin' it home to quitting time this week is Bop Alloy, the collaboration between Baltimore rapper Substantial and Seattle producer Marcus D
This Rap style brings me back to that classic era Long Island/Queens sound from Tribe and De La Soul that has kept hip-hop-heads bouncing for over 30 Years. The beats are sick, the rhymes are great and whole album sounds like it should be listened to with a snifter of brandy in hand. Take whatever you've been working on, put it to bed and get out there and enjoy your weekend.

Greetings Mortals

Hat tip to my girl Megan (click her deliciousness here) on this one, but Portland export Unknown Mortal Orchestra is currently supplying my Thursday with it's necessary grooves. You can stream their whole self titled debut on Spin's website right now. It's a really good listen capable of eeking you closer and closer to that glorious Friday.

Even though they look like the only three people who could be beaten up by Michael Cera, these awk-looking kids pack a serious punch as they hit the scene with this tune, Ffunny Ffriends. Oddly enuff, it's not the ffirst time we've had a Double-F here on #EDAS, (click here to teleport). Catch them in NYC September 14 when they come to Webster Hall with Toro y Moi (tix here). Out of towners, including some dates in Europe, check the rest of their tour dates here.

Sonnuva...

Check out this remix of Danish singer (and Neo-Brooklynite) Oh Land's 2010 single, Son of a Gun, produced by Jacob Plant. I'm not a 100% what's happening here but the heavy industrial sound over the bubble-pop is a welcome combination.

THE MOON SUMMER SPECTACULAR

For more than two years one of the best secrets in NYC has been The Moon, an old timey medicine show that takes place twice a month in the back of a Williamsburg shanty. This Thursday night, the hottest ticket in town (since Saturday's Jeff The Brotherhood/ F*cked Up show) is getting ripped at  92YTribeca as New York's most underrated (and least disgusting) venue hosts Brooklyn's Best Variety Show for the first time. CLICK HERE TO GET YOUR TICKETS NOW because this time the Moonkids have pulled out all the stops, bringing with them some of the best comedians, entertainers, rappers, funkers and puppets the scene has to offer. Nat Towsen, the Co-Host of The Moon, is actually one of my best buds and I got him to take a few Moon-Minutes out of his day sit down for #EDAS' first ever interview:

MK: Is it true you were raised a clown?
NT: Both of my parents were clowns, but I'm agnostic.
MK: You know I’m afraid of clowns. When they eventually revolt against their homo sapien brothers, who’s side are you on?
NT: I'd probably wait it out and see who looks like they're winning and try to pass for that
MK: So you're saying you are a "fair-weather homo sapien?"
NT: I guess so... Are you trying to get me to declare that I am no longer a human? I think your fear is making you into some anti-Clown radical.
MK: Well I don't consider myself anti-anything, but I have no trouble admitting I won't be joining the Million Clown March anytime soon.

MK: How would you describe your show, The Moon, to let’s say, an undiscovered native people living deep within the Jungles of Papua New Guinea?
NT: I'd say, it's kind of like The Muppet Show. You guys have The Muppet Show, right? Oh, Jesus... You guys have Jesus, right? No? Well then I have some Good News for you.
Actually, I'd say that it's a bunch of my friends and I getting together and acting out a story we've written with comedy, music, dance, clown, and other types of guests interspersed. There are videos and cartoons, recurring segments and characters, and alcohol available for purchase. Plus here's a here's a Code for Two bucks Off!
The Kombai People of Papua New Guinea... Not Amused
MK: What excites you about the comedy industry?
NT: Right now, we're seeing a major resurgence in the popularity of comedy. This time, it's a lot more varied, and a lot more creative and abstract, rather than the fairly standardized club-style comedy of the last comedy boom in the late '80s. A lot of the so-called "alternative" comedians of the last decade are now creating major television and film comedy, so there's almost an over-abundance of good comedy coming out now. Hopefully it doesn't crash before I find a way to exploit it.

MK: Where do you think you and your partner Bob Walles stack up in terms of famous duos?
NT: I'd like to think we're in between the Righteous Brothers and the Smothers Brothers. But realistically, we probably stack up just above Hall and Oates and just below Snap and Crackle, ever since Pop died.

MK: Who is your dream Moon Musical Guest?
NT: Biz Markie. He's a rapper, DJ, beatboxer, singer, collector, lunatic, and one of the funniest dudes alive. I might explode if I ever see him in person. I hope he reads this, but the rumor is that he's never been on the internet.

MK: Last Question: Are you still mad that I put up a website of Dog T-shirts that say "Nat’s A Bitch"?
NT: Furious!

So there we go, if you are anywhere near NYC this Thursday, make sure your bring your self and anyone else you love to 92YTribeca for an evening with The Moon. Cost of admission gets you sketch comedy duo Kurt & Kristen, old school funnyman Todd Barry, alt-rapper MC Chris, the tunes of CSC Funk Band, Puppets by Puppetyranny, Videos by Everything is Terrible, a super secret Pale & Baby-esque special guest and most likely, a little drunken heckling by Yours Truly. Have you gotten your tickets yet? If not click the dog!

See you Thursday!

Come Undone

Welcome back #EDAS pal, Sal, back for another guest post...

"Come Undone" is the 4th track off of the third full length collaboration album (Hawk) between Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell. Both Lanegan and Campbell have developed an exceptional repertoire prior to teaming up for what have been three masterfully composed and poetic tours de force.

Isobel Campbell
Campbell, a multi talented singer of Scottish descent, was formerly a member of Belle & Sebastian, however it did not take long before her celestial vocals found the spotlight on her first solo album under her own name, 2003's Amorino. Currently she has released four solo albums to date, two of which are under the pseudonym The Gentle Waves. Not only does she have an angelic voice, but there is something about her that makes you want to wake up in the same room as her.

Mark Lanegan
Mark Lanegan, a ghost of grunge's past, is probably remembered and endeared by some for his vocals/lyrics in the band he formed in the late 80's, The Screaming Trees. From the start of his career, Lanegan's voice has been one of the most highly recognizable baritones in the business and more often then not, his vocals are a suitable companion to his dark lyrics. Much like Campbell, it did not take long before Lanegan released his first solo album, 1990's Winding Sheet, released on Sub Pop.

In teaming up for this song, the duet have managed to channel the middle ground between heaven and hell, good and evil, dark and light, all while vocalizing over the oscillating piano medley of James Brown's It's a Man's Man's Man's World. However it is not long before that middle ground is lost and the lyrics bring you back to reality where seemingly the characters in the song realize they can't have it both ways, but not before a prolonged struggle.

It is easy to get lost in the sway of the vintage composition, but more rewarding is the story in the lyrics as Mark Lanegan's deep voice pulls Isobel Campbell's soulful whisper to a darker place.

THE BOYS R BACK IN TOWN

This Saturday, Tennessee's Terrible Twosome, JEFF The Brotherhood come back to destroy NYC once again. Last time Jake and Jamin were in town, I caught them at Santos Party House where they... well I'll just show the picture exactly as I remember it (see if you can spot me, having the best time ever recorded on film).

TRUST ME! JEFF is one of the hottest bands out there right now. Their raw powerful energy and non-stop touring, playing over 200 shows a year including big-time festivals like Bonnaroo & SXSW, has got people noticing like world-owning rap mogul Jay-Z who recently repped JTB on his site. JEFF is as real as it gets, follow them on twitter or blogspot, peep their indie label, buy their brand new album WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS (which comes out tomorrow) or come see them on the current leg of their never-ending tour at 285 Kent this Saturday. Check out their brand new vid that I'm pretty sure was taped at the very show I was at in March.
