Full Moon Party with Yacht!

Last night, under the full moon and the best view on this island, Portland duo Yacht played the perfect set at Beekman Beer Garden to celebrate summer’s end. It was fantastic to get my feet in the sand one last time, especially amidst glowing couches, Brooklyn skyline, and a lot of incredibly good looking people. Strong, delicious, dark and stormy’s from event sponsor Sailor Jerry and the perfect weather kept my inner old-lady from kvetching about the late-ish (after 11 p.m. on a school night?!) start time.

The set itself was fantastic - energetic, fun, and significantly more polished than I expected. I mean, just when you think a girlcrush can go no further, Claire L. Evans comes out in ying-yang bike shorts! The set crescendoed with their sing-along anthem, Dystopia, but it was fantastic to hear some older jams. (I’ve been a fan since I heard Yacht remix Hock It by The Blow.) It was an excellent dance party to behold, in the glow of incandescent triangles and the Brooklyn Bridge.

My only gripe? I think it’s so weird that Beekman has bottle service going on on the beach while shows are going on. Serious cognitive dissonance: watching bottles of absolute with sparklers taped to them being served while a Yacht, band who advocates for free technology, and anti-consumerism sings ironically, “We want all that stuff, all that stuff that costs too much.”

All in all an amazing evening. Matte really knows how to throw a party. Yacht really knows how make that party, party HARD!

I fell in love with this song the very second I heard it while sitting in the back of the most influential music class of my life, I just happened to be sitting next to our founding father of EDAS. 

B.T. Express’s debut album of the same title had this effect on millions in 1974 as it spent weeks as the #1 on the R&B charts. The popularity and timing of “Do It” could claim it as disco but to me this leans way towards funk. The song quickly builds from bongos, to a funky guitar riff, to a bass line that speaks the chorus. That chorus tells you to enjoy life, find the things that make you happy, than do it again. Horns and organ join in later to complete the circle of this funk jam.

Stay hungry for the finer things this world has to offer. Art, love, music, friends, nature…. Whatever it is, Do it ‘til you’re satisfied.

Kitty Pryde will be at Santo's Party House tonight (8/22) and EDAS will be covering of course. Hopefully I'll be basey and not creepy and get to talk to her! Upcoming NYC Rapper, Lakutis will be opening.

Just saw this cat last night at The Moon's 72nd Show at Union Pool. His set was pretty tight considering the audience was mostly white people who do not like rap. Dude opened with Death Shark off his "I'm in the Forrest" EP which was mixed by Lynas at Brooklyn's famed Ishlab Studios.  Next he treated us to a couple new tracks from his up coming album, Body Scream (produced by Ratatat) and Too Ill for the Line (Produced by Kynan Williams). He told me the name of the album but I got drunk and forgot! Whoopsie!

Happy Birthday Charles Bukowski

I became infatuated with Charles "Hank" Bukowski a little bit ago after reading his first novel Post Office. The book is an ode to a lifetime of menial work. Bukow's barely veiled protagonist works every day in the Postal Center, and his job consists exclusively of sorting envelopes into different boxes. It let me know that there is no escaping hard work. Even if you are spending your life writing about the music you love, you are still just putting things into other things. In fact I believe they just opened a Post Office themed Whiskey Bar in Williamsburg. Maybe I will stop by there tonight on the way to the Buffalo Killers show.

After researching his attitude towards music, I discovered he makes several references to Jean Sibelius, a finnish composer of the Romantic Period. I am not an expert in Classical music, but there is certainly a very special quality to it. If you have a drink tonight, pour a little out for ol' Hank.

After another Youtube search,  I have discovered a fan-made Bukowski tribute video that features one of my absolute favorite songs by one of my absolute favorite groups of traveling minstrels. Here is Dr. Dog with a song that juxtaposes all too well with the guy they called, the Dirty Old Man.

Music festivals seem to bring out the inner fashionista (or whatever the male equivalent is) in all of us  and the Inaugural Catalpa Festival was no exception. Just like music, clothing is a form of personal expression. Even with the temporary inclimate weather, some music fans were treating Randall's Island  more like a runway than a concert. The song today is one of the most high energy performers of the fest, Girl Talk. Needless to say, the crowd really enjoyed his set.

Full Moon Fever with YACHT

I have been kicking myself for almost a year for missing Yacht at Dekalb Market's Brooklyn Night Bazaar last fall (It was an epic beach day, in OCTOBER.). (Side note: Can Brooklyn Night Bazaar please come back?) Luckily it looks like I'll have a second chance to see my favorite band on Instagram under the stars and a big ole' moon next month.

Beekman Beach Club and Beer Garden will host the LA duo along with Sneaky Sound System and Tesla Boy. The Full Moon celebration takes place on August 30th at the South Street Seaport and is set to  include glammy electro dance jams, fire dancers, delicious food and outstanding views. I am hard pressed to think of a better way to round out summer than dancing with a beer in hand, on a tiny man-made beach under the Brooklyn Bridge, and blaming all of the evening's bad decisions on the lunar phase. Catalpa Recap // TV On The Radio

One of acts I was most looking forward to seeing was TV On The Radio. Not because I'm a huge fan, but because during my college years, at their height of popularity, I was knee deep in a pile of dusty old vinyl. After missing the entire TVOTR rise to fame, I was curious to see what all the fuss was about. I was extremely surprised, not only at how much Guitarist Kyp Malone looks like a Koala-Bear, but at the sheer power these guys bring to the stage. 

Lead singer Tunde Adebimpe and multi-tasker David Sitek formed the band while sharing space in the same Brooklyn building. With influences covering Rock, Funk, Punk, and Electronica, the end result had the whole crowd working as one rocking, dancing, undulating organism. Just being part of it was an amazing experience. I would definitely see them live again. My favorite song they played was a straight up toe-tapper called Golden Age. Catalpa Recap // Reggae Mon-Day

This weekend I was a guest at the amazing Catalpa Music Festival. It was an outstanding inaugural event from top to bottom, but one of the all time highlights had to be the Reggae Stage.

It may be known to Rasta Mon-Day fans that I have a hot and cold relationship with the king of all reggae greats, Robert Nesta Marley. I have to say though, ever since this weekend it has been nothing but love. The Bob Marley Tribute band above did a beautiful rendition of the following song that has been playing in my head since Saturday. Enjoy a live performance by Bob and a full band (the only noticeable absence is the best of the I-Three's, Marcia Griffiths). You can even take this Mon-Day to the next level by watching the entire 1979 Santa Barbara Concert here.

EDAS Shout-Out in the Chicago Tribune!

It has come to my attention that, thanks to Filligar, #EDAS has gotten a shout out in the Chicago Tribune.  In a piece about Filligar's most vital member, DeeDee (their tour-van), I got an unnamed shoutout as the "music blogger" that keeps DeeDee a'rocking while they drive long distances from gig to gig! You can check out the entire article here (without having to subscribe) but I've pulled the most important quote for your convenience.  

"The stereo, just passable, was fixed just this morning. They have been relying, lately, on a flash drive containing some 6,000 songs passed to them by a music blogger."

What an honor considering I love the Windy City and free uncredited press. Next time we'll get the site name in, but for now, baby steps. I'm getting ready for a big weekend including Filligar's show tonight, and the inaugural Catalpa Festival, featuring an #EDAS allstar lineup of Snoop Dogg, The Black Keys, The Sheepdogs and even a fully Dreadicated Reggae Stage.

Filligar Comes to Rock the Gramercy Theatre

Fresh off their Outlaw Roadshow tour with the Counting Crows, Rock and Roll saviors Filligar return to the Big Apple to take a bite out of the famed Gramecy Theatre. Not only are these guys one of my favorite bands, but they are quickly climbing my list of acts I've seen the most in my long concert-going career. I wouldn't keep coming back if they didn't get better every time. Trust me, grab your tickets now and swing by tomorrow for a bill filled with great young bands, capped off by one of the best. Download their latest album for the price of your choice and see the light if you haven't already done so.

Don't Miss Way Yes in NYC Tonight 7/19 and Tomorrow 7/20

Two glorious live music options tonight as yesterday's Intrepid Show with Delicate Steve (minus Red Baraat) has been postponed until tonight. Those who follow #EDAS closely surely remember that today is the first of two area Way Yes shows. Catch the Tropicália fusioneers and all-around nice guys, as they take the Pianos Stage tonight at 11:00PM with support by Strange Shapes, RIMAR and Railbird (tickets here).

If you can't make it down to the lower east side tonight, then swing by Williamsburg tomorrow for the early show at Glasslands with Neighbors and Friend Roulette (tickets here). Possible... Nay, probable #EDAS afterparty at a local drinking hole. Follow @EDAS2go for the most up to date info. Definitely come out to enjoy some great unique and worldly heartfelt jams.

Delicate Summer Concert Update / 4Knots Recap

Is it unusually hot or is it just this pier?

]The hottest season of the year is in full effect and that means a near overload of Summer Concert options for you to sort out. This year, EDAS is bringing some heat of its own, fighting fire with fire with the best up to date concert info and smokin' reviews. We're already on the list for a bunch of great shows, festivals and much more more so keep checking back to make sure you don't miss a thing.

The sonic whirlwind began this past weekend with the 4Knots Music Festival, which is thrown by the Village Voice. Great friend of the blog, Sal and I specifically trekked down to the South Street Seaport to see psychedelic, slide-guitar act, Delicate Steve. When we arrived, the crowd already kind of big (not to mention a little hipster and high-school heavy) but after a warm $5 Beer, any personal spatial expectations were dropped and we joined the masses. We caught a few minutes of Bleached at the main stage and then Team Spirit at Skipper's. The girls of Bleached are as beautiful to look at as they are to listen to but Team Sprit really showed these youngin's how the things are done. Then

Steve came out swinging with some great licks off his surreal new record, Positive Force, available now on the David Byrne's Luaka Bop record label. All of a sudden, not more than a couple of songs into the set a hubub breaks out. It turns out that across the way, Pier 17 is on fire! This pier is the main tourist strip with a mall with tons of stores and restaurants. Luckily, Steve jumps into action, using the microphone to get the attention of the hundreds in danger. At the same time a local tourist boat called 'The Shark' sprung into action started hosing down the blaze. That's where I got this epic picture of a Shark, fighting a fire in front of a New York Landmark topped off with American Flag.

Unfortunately after all the excitement, Delicate Steve was unable to finish his set. Don't fret (pun intended) because he comes back to play another nautical-themed show, this time onboard the world famous Intrepid.

Click here to RSVP and then show up at the Intrepid on the West Side Highway on Wednesday at 6PM. It's rain or shine and first come first served (barring lighting). Those that get in get to enjoy not only Delicate Steve, but MNDR, Javelin and North Indian Party Rockers, Red Baraat. If it holds out, EDAS will be there to cover the event in style. Earlier this fine Biggie Sunday, I was grinding out some work listening to one of my favorite rappers.

Everyone knows that a Big Pun song without an explicit sign is like peanut butter without jelly. Ironically enough the only track without the EXPLICIT stamp happens to be the EXPLICIT version of I'm Not A Player. Wow it definitely is explicit.
