To celebrate our nation's birth I present national treasure, Ms. Sharon Jones singing Woody Guthrie's classic american ditty, This Land is Your Land. Great things coming up here at EDAS so stay tuned.
All sorts of awesome things have been happening in space lately and if you haven't kept up, you've been missing out. Luckily, New York City's, Space Club Co-Founder and EDAS/UFO Correspondant, Deena, basically lives in outer space. She has a full rundown of all you need to know about our universe complete with a playlist of Cosmic Space Jams to send you over the moon.
Hey Humanoids, this has been a great season for celestial activity so far! First, there was an annular, or ring shaped, solar eclipse back in May.
Next up was the Venus transit, which won't happen again until 2117. I probably did irreparable damage to my retinas trying to see a circle move in front of another circle but it was all in the name of science!
The Venus Transfer
Last week's solstice marks the official beginning of summer and there is a big announcement just around the corner. This Fourth of July, CERN is preparing to release information about the latest results of the experiments involving the Large Hadron Collider. Have they found the Higgs boson or God Particle? Have they cloned Geronimo? Have they finally created a Talking Heads reunion?
In honor of all this and the fact that space is the place in general, I've compiled this playlist of extra-terrestrial summer jams for your listening pleasure! We've got EDAS Favorites Dr. Dog, Patti Smith, a David Bowie cover and more.
Yours in Cosmic Chaos,
Deena

Today is Fête de la Musique, or for those that speak the Queen's English, World Music Day. According to various sources, World Music Day was first conceptualized in France in 1976 by an American, Joel Cohen, who proposed an all-night music celebration to mark the beginning of the summer solstice. It makes me proud to know that there is a day set aside to celebrate the vast and diverse musical traditions that span this big blue marble that we all share.
My first (and still favorite) job out of school was an internship working with the amazing World Music Institute here in New York. They do the thankless job of spreading the awareness of Non-Beiber, Non-Kanye music to those who come from other places and miss their tones of home, or those that are just curious about how the rest of the planet rocks out. It was an unpaid internship, but what I lacked in funds, I received tenfold in music education. The music I got back then has stayed so close to my heart (and ears) to this very day. Here are some of the highlights to help you celebrate World Music Day. Any recommendations? Leave them in the comments or email me @ everydayanothersong@gmail.com.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gives An Amazing Live Qawwali Performance
The Rap Taylor Swift played a show last week at The Knit in Wburg. I missed it (dag yo) but I’m sure it registered somewhere on the scale between dope and worth the trip to Brooklyn.
Check out Kitty’s new 5 song EP, Haha I’m Sorry. It includes the previously posted “Okay Cupid”, the old fashioned love song “Gave Me Scabies,” her cover of the infectious Carly Mae Jensen single “Call Me Maybe” and “Orion’s Belt” featuring Riff Raff. the carnival themed video for the latter can be found below.
I have already expressed my ever increasing love for Way Yes on #EDAS, both in interview form and in dog form. If you have already heard of these amazing minstrels, you have undoubtedly been yearning to indulge in more of their heartfelt honest lyrics and unique Afro-Brazili-ribbean melodies. Luckily for you and your ears, their brand new Walkability EP is available TODAY from Lefse Records. It is one of the most enjoyable and creative albums I have heard in a long time.
In our last conversation here's what one of the guys had to say in anticipation of the new release:
Records are one of the great art forms in my opinion. Also, the records are what you get to leave behind as tangible proof that you existed. And with the wonders of the InterWeb and Time Capsules there's a good chance they'll always exist in one form or another. I know records aren't as profitable as they used to be, but they're at least being listened to by more people than ever.
Below you will find the official video for their title track off the EP, which features the absolutely nothing out of the ordinary if you have ever been to Columbus. I feel like I partied with that blue guy back in my OSU days, in fact he may still owe me money. For a select and lucky few who live in Ohio and New York, Summer tour dates are below with the possibility of more to come. Stay tuned to Way Yes and #EDAS for more as it comes.
“Sometimes you just have to jump out the window and grow wings on the way down”
~ Ray Bradbury
I'm not much of a Sci-Fi nerd, save for a few recent episodes of the X-Files on Hulu+, but I was saddened to hear of Ray Bradbury's death today. As a literary artist, he was pretty ballsy. I am definitely in full agreement with this quote. Double song today. The first by Psych-Shredders Hawkwind, dedicated to Bradbury's most famous work; the other by #EDAS Favorite, R&R Hall Of Famer and N'awlins cultural savior, Allen Toussaint, is inspired by his motivational words.
This weekend saw another half-birthday just fly by. That means my beautiful Every Day, Another Song is now 30 Months old... And we'rejust getting started!

Back with another enthralling edition of Rasta Mon-Day, Jimmy Cliff kicks off Celebrate Brooklyn's 2012 season tomorrow beginning at 8:00 at the Prospect Park Bandshell. It seems like only yesterday I was in Central Park covering his amazing 2010 performance at SummerStage. If the weather is anything more manageable than Fire & Brimstone, I suggest you grab an umbrella and prepare to have your Rasta-Socks rocked off.
One of my favorite Brooklyn bands right now is in the midst of a grassroots efforts to make more music. How can you possibly disagree with that?
It has been several years since the last Quiet Loudly album and they are asking YOU to help support them as they record the next one. Using the popular crowd-funding platform, Kickstarter, they have introduced all sorts of incentives to help them pay the exorbitant costs associated with recording an LP. For a few bucks you can have their most recent album, a few more you get all sorts of SWAG. If you are feeling more generous, these strapping young men will record the song of your choice and even cook you serenaded dinner. At they end they are planning to release an EP with all their crowd-chosen covers on it. They have already raised more money than they set out to, but in the weening hours of their efforts, I'm sure they will take all the last minute help they can get.
I have been a big fan of QL for some time now and I would greatly recommend you donate at least the equivalent of a round of beers to their cause. The earth is in desperate need of more of their grungy, ambient, drowned-out surf sounds and you can help by donating to their
Kickstarter Campaign here, NOW! If you have any more questions, watch their informational video below and listen to their song at the bottom.
What time is it now? Well, according to the O'Jays, it's time to get down.
Here are some of Ohio's finest with one of the most beautiful RnB songs I know. This one comes off their seminal album Backstabbers. I have heard that these days its being used in a KFC commercial. Usually I would hate on this, but I can't think of any circumstance that could make listening to this song any less enjoyable.
Bringin' back an old #EDAS tradition, this is the first Biggie Sunday in a while. Enjoy the long Memorial Day Weekend with this favorite collaboration between Talib Kweli & DJ Hi-Tek. there are so many amazing lines in this song. My favorite might be:
Anyone who is anyone will going to be at tonight's sold out Filligar concert as they rock the roof off of Mercury Lounge. More tickets may be available at the door and if you are desperate, you can email me at everydayanothersong@gmail.com I might let you sit on my shoulders under a double length trench-coat.
This is Filligar's last NYC stop before they hit the road supporting the Counting Crows as part of their Outlaw Roadshow Tour. Local dates include a stop at Asbury Park's Stone Pony, Utica's Saranac Brewery, shows in both Cleveland AND Columbus, Ohio, and all sorts of other Canadian, Southern and Mid-Western Dates.
#EDAS has been singing Filligar's praises for over a year now, but people are really beginning to take notice. Nobody mentions these guys without saying they are the best touring band today. I challenge you to find a better live show. The scary part is with a new album in the works, they just keep getting better. Party starts at 9:30, Filligar on at 10:30. See you tonight, be there or be elsewhere.
Back-to-back Nirvana posts but Wow... Robert Glasper really blows me away with this jazzy, hip hop fusion cover of Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit". It makes me wish the day was already here when robots control the world and we all talk using vocoders.
The Robert Glasper Experiment - Smells Like Teen Spirit.
This is a no fail test to confirm whether or not a child is awesome. If said child does not have the following reaction, it does not preclude them from being awesome, only from being this awesome.
